Leo Tolstoy, one of the greatest Russian writers of all time, was born on September 9, 1828, in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia. He came from a noble family and had a privileged upbringing. However, Tolstoy's life took a dramatic turn when he witnessed the horrors of war and became disillusioned with the aristocratic lifestyle.

Tolstoy's early works, such as "Childhood" and "Boyhood," were autobiographical in nature and reflected his own experiences growing up. These novels were well-received and established Tolstoy as a promising young writer. However, it was his epic novels, "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina," that solidified his reputation as a literary genius.
