The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is one of the most important traditional Chinese festivals. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, which usually corresponds to September or October in the Gregorian calendar. The festival is celebrated to give thanks for the harvest and to worship the moon.
Legend has it that there was a time when ten suns appeared in the sky, causing great damage to crops and people's lives. Hou Yi, a skilled archer, shot down nine of the suns, saving the earth from destruction. As a reward, he was given an elixir of immortality. However, he did not want to leave his wife, Chang'e, so he hid the elixir at home. One day, while Hou Yi was away, a villain named Feng Meng broke into their house and tried to steal the elixir. To protect it, Chang'e swallowed the elixir and flew to the moon. Since then, people have worshipped Chang'e and celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival to commemorate her.
