Commentary: Cultivation lies in the mind
Buddhism is all about the mind; cultivation should be initiated from the heart, or it will just be superficial. The meaning of this statement supposedly needs no further explanations. In the world of Buddhism, the more respect you show, the more merits you gain. I once saw a Buddhist who carried with her a bag of small value coins, i.e., something like 1 cent or 10 cents. She rushed around inside the temple to throw a coin into every donation box and then left. In contrast, another Buddhist whom I met started off from the northeast of China to make a pilgrimage on foot to Wu Tai Mountain in Shan Xi Province, and it had taken her a couple of months to bow her way there. Supposedly what they gained respectively is self explanatory.
佛法是心法,修学要发自内心,而不是流于表面,这句话的含义相信没什么需要解释的了。佛法讲一分恭敬一分收获,十分恭敬十分收获。我曾经见过一位信众,她拿着一袋一毛一分之类的硬币,在寺院跑了一圈,往每个功德箱扔了一个钱,然后就走了。相比另外一位信众,她从东北出发徒步朝礼山西的五台山,一路拜了好几个月才到达。她们各自的收获相信是不言而喻了。
As for monastics, inward cultivation is certainly more important than outward demeanor. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420 - 589 A.D.), there were two acquainted cultivators, namely Master Hui Gong and Master Hui Yuan. Hui Gong was keen on traveling around, whereas Hui Yuan was keen on learning the Mahayana Classics. They met again after being parted for 30 years, during which Hui Yuan preached around to educate his disciples whereas Hui Gong traveled widely. This time when they met, they shared stories about their cultivation. Given that Hui Gong had been traveling extensively, he only chanted regularly the Sutra of the Universal Door Of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, which was a very short chapter. After knowing this Hui Yuan became very resentful and wanted to dislodge and break with Hui Gong, for he considered that Hui Gong had deserted his faith. Hui Gong remained very calm though and wanted to chant the Universal Door Chapter for Hui Yuan before leaving. Amusingly, when Hui Gong started chanting, the entire room became so scented with wonderful fragrance, heavenly melody started to play autonomously, and it began to rain heavenly flowers until the end of the chant. On seeing this, Hui Yuan dissolved into tears, and confessed to Hui Gong that he had been blind yet arrogant.
对出家人来说,内在的修为当然是比形象更重要。在南北朝时期, 有两位同修,一位是惠恭法师,一位是惠远法师。惠恭喜欢云游,惠远则喜欢学习大乘经典。他们阔别三十年后再次相见,在这三十年间,惠远到处讲经授徒,惠恭却云游四海。这次见面他们谈到自己的修学,但惠恭因为到处游历只修持了一部很短的《观世音菩萨普门品》。惠远听到后很生气,觉得对方荒废了道业,誓要跟惠恭绝交,并要把他赶走。但惠恭却不慌不忙,要在走前为惠远诵一部《普门品》,谁知惠恭刚开口念诵,就满室异香,天乐自鸣,天花乱坠,一直到念诵结束。眼见这样的情景,惠远不禁泪流满面,并向惠恭忏悔自己有眼不识泰山。
This is a very good example of inward cultivation. According to the discipline, criticizing for monastic’s fault is prohibited. This rule basically addresses issues regarding monastic’s personal disciplinary misconduct because it is very difficult for us, as a secular person, to judge someone’s true virtuous status. However, if someone does something detrimental to the true Dharma, we, as followers of Buddhism, should step forward bravely to protect the Dharma.
这是内在修行很好的一个实例,而戒律中有不说僧过这一项,这主要是针对出家人的个人戒行,因为我们凡夫俗子是很难判断对方的真正境界。但若对方是破坏正法,我们身为佛子还是应该挺身而出,维护正法的。
