譬如磨鏡。垢去明存。斷欲無求。當得宿命

Commentary: Queries on gaining the wisdom of past lives (1)
In Buddhism there are six types of supernatural power, namely heavenly vision, heavenly ear, mind reading, supernatural wisdom of past lives, unimpeded bodily function, and complete extinction of afflictions. Apart from complete extinction of afflictions, the other five can also be demonstrated by heretics, ghosts and heavenly beings. What is complete extinction of afflictions then? It is a status at which one has acquired pure wisdom to eliminate all afflictions and thus can quit cyclic rebirth. Such supernatural power is exclusive to Buddhism.
佛教讲的神通一共有六种，包括天眼通、天耳通、他心通、宿命通、神足通、漏尽通。除了漏尽通外，其它五种神通是外道或鬼神都可以有的。那什么是漏尽通它就是证得无漏的智慧，烦恼尽除，到达了脱生死的境界，所以这是佛教独有的。
至于宿命通, 这是指能知道自己乃至别人过去生所做过之事的能力。在修行上证量不同，所能了知的时间、地域、界别范围亦会有所不同。例如阿罗汉最多可以了知八万劫前的事，而佛却能了知无量劫前的事。阿罗汉最多可知三千国土中自地及下界众生之宿命，却不能了知佛菩萨的事。
神通除了可以通过修行获得外，也可以因为果报而获得，例如投生天道、饿鬼道、乃至往生西方极乐的众生都会有神通。另外，有些普通人会因为鬼神附体而获得神通，当鬼神离去后，神通就会消失，更有利用外物或一些方法获得神通的，例如算命。可见神通并不是佛教的专利，而佛陀一般也不允许弟子示现神通。（待续）
