■ 缘起

Succeeding the Buddhist dharma foundation course, a Buddhist dharma weekly workshop will be launched starting from December 7 on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Both English and Putonghua will be used as the media of instruction. In this workshop, we will share and discuss some selected Buddhist video/sound clips and reading materials over a cup of coffee.

紧接佛法闻思班，2019年12月7日起，每周六下午14:00 ，在天开寺内，举办佛法双语工作坊。课程以中英双语授课，在轻松的氛围中，一起品咖啡，一起分享及讨论一些精选教学视频、音频及其他教材。

You can aspire to understand the fundamentals of Buddhism, learn to communicate the dharma with others in English, sharpen your English listening/oral skills,or make friends. All are welcomed to join us. Since we want to make this workshop as interactive as possible,the use of live broadcast will be minimized.You are therefore encouraged to participate in person.

*问01：师父好！佛法双语工作坊已经上了两节课，您可以总结一下学习的内容吗

答：我们主要学习了一些常见的词汇及概念，因为佛法词汇比较生僻，不懂的话很难沟通交流。

*问02：我看新词汇也是学了不少的，请您介绍一下。

答：要是我把这些词汇连贯起来，会是以下这样的：

我们会经常听到大乘佛法及小乘佛法两个概念。大乘佛法强调慈悲、自利利他的修行最终成佛，而小乘佛法强调我空及十二因缘，来达至个人解脱。现时中国、日本、韩国、越南等地都盛行大乘佛法。

Mahayana and Hinayana are the names of two branches of Buddhism that we often come across. The school of Mahayana emphasizes the cultivation of loving kindness and compassion for the sake of others in order to attain Bu ddhahood mutually. As for the school of Hinayana, it emphasizes self emptiness and and/or the twelve links of interdependent arising to realize individual liberation. Nowadays Mahayana is the prevalent form of Buddhism across China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.

佛法的基本教义是相信因果及轮回，我们的身体、语言及思想都可以造业，也就是身业、口业及意业。在命终后，我们所种下的业会牵引我们投生在六道之中，生生死死循环不断。如善业较重，我们会投生到人道、天道或阿修罗道。如恶业或罪较重，我们则生到畜牲、饿鬼或地狱道中。在贪嗔痴的驱使下，一般人都是恶业多善业少，所以在轮回的过程中，我们大部分时间都生在三恶道中受苦。

The law of Cause and effect, and Samsara are the basic doctrines of Buddhism.Deeds or karma can be created through our body, speech,and mind resulting in bodily karma,verbal karma,and mental karma.When our life ends,the forces of our karma will drive us into one of the six paths of Samsara,leading to endless repetition of births and deaths.If a person’s wholesome karma prevails,he will be reborn in the path of human being,heaven,or asura.Otherwise unwholesome karma will lead a person to the path of animals,hungry ghosts,or hell. Under the seduction of greed,hatred,and illusion,people in general commit far more bad deeds than good ones.This means for most of our lives we suffer in the three evil paths in the course of Samsara.

我们先不谈出离轮回，怎样才可以避免堕落三恶道? 我们需要多种善业、累积福报，当知道受持三皈五戒就有无量无边的功德。要成为一个佛教徒，我们首先要皈依三宝，也就是佛法僧，并且可以受持五戒：不杀生、不偷盗、不邪淫、不妄语、不饮酒。从宏观角度讲，妄语也包含了恶口、搬弄是非，及一些低俗戏谑性语言，而酒包括了烟酒毒品。如能加上不贪、不嗔、不痴，我们世间的十种善业就更加圆满了。

If we set aside the aspiration of renunciation from Samsara for the moment,how can we avoid falling into the three evil paths? We have to create more wholesome deeds in order to accumulate bliss or merits. It is important to know that the merits arising from taking refuge in the Three Jewels and upholding the five precepts are boundless. Taking refuge in the Three Jewels, i.e., the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, is the first step to becoming a lay Buddhist. Going one step further, one can take and uphold the five precepts, namely, no killing, no stealing, no sexual misconduct, no lying and no drinking. From a macroscopic perspective, the meaning of lying should also include abusive languages, talebearing, and frivolous/vulgar languages. Likewise, the meaning of drinking should cover smoking and intoxicants as well. If one can also stay away from greed, hatred, and delusion, his/her ten worldly wholesome deeds will become well-rounded.

*问03：以上这些与小乘佛法和大乘佛法的解脱是什么关系

答：我们先了解如何提升生命素质，再谈解脱。基本上明白因果，断恶修善就能让我们生命得到升华，受用无穷，这是现代生活最需要的。其他重要的教义之后会继续学习，希望大家多来参加。

*问04：这些词汇蛮实用的，但我英语不好，对参加工作坊有些担心。

答：我们是双语，不是英语，所以是中英並用的，基本上不存在听不懂或不会说的问题。

*问05：在筹备工作坊过程中遇到什么困难或启发

答：有的，英文佛法用的都是现代语言，所以看英文版会发现一些更容易理解的解释，例如五戒的盗，有时候会翻译成 taking without being given，意思是没有给你就拿走，这就是不予取。但引用外语同时也会遇到一些问题，例如大乘佛法的英文资料会比较少，有些佛法基础的英文书籍里完全找不到慈悲这个词，讲的主要是小乘佛法的内容，这是需要作补充的，否则就不知道慈悲是佛法的核心价值。又例如邪淫有时会翻译成 adultery，但这个字是婚外情的意思，跟邪淫的本义还是有很大区别的。很多发现其实都蛮有趣，若掌握得好，我们可以更准确地表达我们想讲的佛法，更好地沟通。阿弥陀佛！

Instructor's bio:

Master Hong-tian,who was born in Hong Kong,took tonsure under Venerable Master Kuan-jian in Beijing Tiankai Temple in 2010. He has been the instructor of the Buddhist dharma foundation course since 2016. Before commencing monkhood he had worked in Hewlett Packard, IBM and other global companies for more than 10 years. Master Hong-tian is also a holder of Bachelor's Degree (Central Queensland University, Australia), Master's Degree (Chinese University of Hong Kong), and a former CPA (Hong Kong, UK) .

导师简介：

宏添法师生于香港，2010年在北京天开寺礼上宽下见法师披剃出家，並自2016年起担任佛法闻思班导师至今。出家前法师曾于惠普、IBM、等跨国公司任职10多年，及考获澳洲中央昆士兰大学学士、香港中文大学硕士、前香港及英国专业会计师。
