Mantener los preceptos es establecer una conexión con los méritos del Buda.  Los tres refugios y los cinco preceptos están destinados a mantenerse de por vida.  Cuando el cuerpo físico de esta vida sale, los cinco preceptos ya no existen.  Lo que queda es toda una vida de méritos acumulados a través de la defensa de los preceptos.  Solo el precepto del Bodhisattva permanece con nosotros desde el momento en que tomamos el precepto hasta que alcanzamos la Budeidad.  Tanto el mortal como el santo comparten el mismo cuerpo al tomar el precepto del Bodhisattva, el cuerpo del santo entra en el cuerpo de los mortales.  Por lo tanto, una vez que se toma el precepto del Bodhisattva, mientras que el cuerpo es mortal, el corazón ya es un Bodhisattva; esta es la transformación de un mortal a un santo.

To uphold precepts is to make a connection with merits of the Buddha. The three refuges and five precepts are meant to be upheld for life. When the physical body of this lifetime exits, the five precepts no longer exist. What remains is a lifetime of merits accumulated through upholding of the precepts. Only the Bodhisattva precept stays with us from the time we took the precept to our attainment of Buddha-hood. Both mortal and saint share the same body when taking the Bodhisattva precept, the body of the saint enters the body of us mortals. Hence, once Bodhisattva precept is taken, while the body is mortal, the heart is already a Bodhisattva – this is the transformation from a mortal to a saint.

持戒就是跟佛的功德接轨。三皈五戒是尽形寿的，当此生肉身消亡的时候，五戒没有了，仅留下一辈子持戒的功德；唯有菩萨戒，从受戒时即跟随我们一直到成佛。受菩萨戒的时候是凡圣同体的，圣人的体进入到我们凡人的体当中。所以受了菩萨戒，身体虽然是凡夫，心已经是菩萨，这就是转凡成圣。
