Do you know “the father of Chinese music”? Have you heard of “the instrument of the sages”? Two of the oldest Chinese arts, Calligraphy and Qin music, do they share anything in common? Come and join us to find out answers from the sound of ancient China!

The Qin, an ancient Chinese zither producing a delicate sound from seven silk strings, is considered as one of the four artistic pursuits, along with calligraphy, painting and poetry. Intended for self-culture, it is a quiet instrument with subtly-nuanced tones. In ancient China, Qin music was regarded as “elegant” music as opposed to “vulgar” music such as that of the Zheng. Thus, it was also played as a means to nurture virtue and longevity, Confucian and Daoist influences. Rituals were practiced before playing: washing hands and bathing, putting on modest clothes, adopting a respectful countenance, and burning incense to purify the air and the mind. All were performed to show respect for this revered instrument, the Dao (Way) it embodies, and to communicate with heaven and earth.

In this lecture, we will discuss the interrelation of two arts: Qin and Calligraphy. Chinese aesthetic theories of the two arts will be discussed, especially the abstract beauty of notes and lines and the imitation of animals and objects in nature. Interplay between the yin/yang polarity of empty and full will also be explored. Both performance on the Qin and demonstrations of calligraphy will be presented.

伏羲作琴，上古玄音。十指拨七弦，一弦清一心。三千年精粹弹指间，三十寸悲喜楼台里。

古琴，是中国几千年来登得大雅之堂的高雅乐器，也是位列中国传统四艺“琴棋书画”之首的文化瑰宝，被古人誉为“圣人治世之音，君子养修之物。” 古琴的弹奏指法有一百多种，表现力强，是世界上独具特色的乐器。古时贤人雅士，或聚高山流水，或聚亭台楼榭，弹琴，书法。琴音的律动与笔尖的流转，既能描绘出小桥流水，又能勾勒出苍山峻峰。古人在演奏前，需净手、沐浴、更衣、凝神、焚香、清心，足见古琴在中国人心目中的地位。

11月20日，葉明媚博士同哥伦比亚大学学生学者联谊会一起，邀您品味古琴的韵味，倾听中华文化之大音。

Mingmei Yip, PhD in musicology from the University of Paris (Sorbonne) on a scholarship from the French Government. A master performer on the Qin. She has given lectures and performances at venues such as Metropolitan Museum of Art, Carnegie Hall, New York Philharmonic, Columbia University, Oxford University, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Beijing University, the University of Paris, Amsterdam University, Oberlin Conservatory, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the China Institute in New York. Mingmei has served as consultant for Beijing’s Chinese Qin Association, director for Chinese Kun Opera and Guqin Research Association, artistic consultant for New York Cultural Art Association, as well as on the academic board of the Chengdu International Qin Conference.

Also a writer, Mingmei’s literary career began at fourteen when her essay about art was published in a literary magazine. She has published fourteen books, with two on the qin. Her latest being her 7th novel The Witch’s Market (Kensington Books) which received a glowing review from the New York Times and her 2nd children’s book Grandma Panda’s China Storybook (Tuttle Publishing, 2014) which she both wrote and illustrated. She wrote columns for seven major newspapers and has appeared on over 50 TV and radio programs in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and the United States. Her poems were published and performed in Hong Kong, Taiwan and the U.S.

Mingmei is also accomplished as a painter and calligrapher. A one-person show of her paintings of Guan Yin (the Chinese Goddess of Compassion) and calligraphy was held at the New York Open Center Gallery in SoHo in 2002. This exhibit was the subject of a full hour special program on CHN cable in New Jersey.

Mingmei was a professor of music in Hong Kong, and in 2005, an International Institute of Asian Studies fellow in Holland. She has taught qin playing and calligraphy at two major Hong Kong Universities.

叶明媚为法国巴黎大学（Sorbonne）音乐博士，专攻民族音乐学与中国音乐,研究范围包括音乐史、音乐美学、古琴、佛教梵呗等。叶氏自幼习钢琴，古琴师承泛川派琴家蔡德允女士，后获法国政府奖学金负笈法国，在巴黎大学攻读民族音乐学，论文为《古琴音乐与理论的研究》，并以优异成绩取得博士学位。八零年代任教于香港中文大学音乐系，教授音乐史、音乐理论、乐器、专题研究及古琴等课程，后任浸会学院音乐系高级讲师。除授课外，叶氏经常作公开演讲、演奏及参与国际性学术会议，并策划音乐会、学术会议，主持电台音乐节目，为学报、报章杂志等撰写音乐、学术专栏，又从事书画、新诗、散文及小说等创作。

1992年叶氏移民美国，曾为美国肯德州立大学访问教授。现在纽约从事古琴及书法推广活动，曾为著名的纽约大都会艺术博物馆（Metropolitan Museum of Art)，卡内基音乐厅 (Carnegie Hall)，纽约管弦乐团（New York Philharmonic）邀请作古琴,书法，与水墨画专题演讲及表演。她也是《中国昆剧古琴研究会》古琴专业组理事、北京古琴协会顾问、成都古琴国际会议学术顾问、及纽约书画琴棋会艺术顾问。

叶氏著作共十四种，中文著述包括：《古琴音乐艺术》（商务印书馆）；《古琴艺术与中国文化》（中华书局）；禅文集《人间好时节—禅话禅画》（中华书局）；散文集《天地人间总相逢》（突破出版社）；《音乐天地》（商务印书馆）；及超过五十篇音乐论文。她最新的学术论文为：Qin：Musical Transmission of the Dao “琴—道家体系的传授”将与2017 年为牛津大学出版社出版。

叶氏亦为美国畅销作家，从1998年起出版了七本以中国女性为题材的英文小说，包括：桃花亭 (Peach Blossom Pavilion)，天女散花(Petals from the Sky)，丝路之歌(Song of the Silk Road)，红粉骷髅(Skeleton Women)，九重天(The Nine Fold Heaven)，千个美丽的密语(Secret of a Thousand Beauties)，女巫市场 (The Witch’s Market)，已翻译成中文，波兰文，俄文，土耳其文，罗马尼亚文、印尼文等十国语文。女巫市场上了纽约时报书评并大获好评。她所写及画插图的两本儿童故事书 Chinese Children’s Favorite Stories 《中国儿童钟爱故事》与Grandma Panda’s China Storybook《熊猫祖母中国故事读本》亦广受美国读者欢迎。

叶明媚现为纽约古琴文化沙龙的主持人及艺术总监。
